This is a photograph, not a rate. It says what share of each department cannot be bought today across 475 shops at once — a measurement no single merchant can make, because it requires knowing what everyone else still has.
The departments at the top of this table are the ones that come in sizes, and that is most of the explanation. Ten variants per model means ten separate chances to be sold out, so soft goods will always look more depleted than hard goods at identical sales volume.
It would be easy to “correct” for that and publish a tidier number. We do not, because the uncorrected figure is the one that matches your experience as a buyer. You do not want a model, you want a model in your size, and the share of listings you cannot buy is exactly the odds you face. A correction would make the table more elegant and less true.
What the sizing effect does mean is that the columns should be read within a department rather than across them. Decks against decks, shoes against shoes.
The practical consequence is about timing, and it runs opposite to the usual advice.
The standard counsel on an expensive purchase is to wait for a better price. On this corpus that is usually sound: most listings do not move at all — see how often a price actually changes — so waiting costs nothing and occasionally wins. But the departments at the top of this table are where waiting has a real and asymmetric cost. A deck that rises in price is an annoyance. A shoe in your size that sells out is simply gone, and the model may never be restocked in that colourway at that shop.
So the two measurements answer different halves of the same question. Will the price fall? — usually not. Will it still be there? — in a department running at this rate of depletion, frequently not. Where the second risk is high and the first is low, waiting has nothing to win and something to lose.
Where it has already been lost, we say so plainly: what sold out at every shop that had it.
Sizing. A deck has one size and a shoe has nine or ten, each selling out separately. A department where every model exists in ten variants will always show a higher share of unavailable listings than one where a model is a single object — even if the shop sells exactly as many of each.
Not on its own. It means the listing cannot be bought today. Popularity, slow restocking, a discontinued line and a supplier problem all look identical from outside, and we will not guess between them.
It is recomputed at the end of every sweep, twice a day, across every listing in the corpus. Stock is the fastest-moving thing we read.
Increasingly, yes — we now read what each variant is, not just whether it is available, and 79.5% of listings carry that detail. Until the coverage is deep enough to publish safely, this page reports departments rather than sizes.
Because a listing count is not an offer. In the departments at the top of this table, a model can be listed, visible, linked and completely unavailable in your size — and no shop's own page tells you that the same model is equally picked over everywhere else.
