Every line is a median across every listing in that department, in US dollars, at the shops we read twice a day. The Listings column is how much evidence each line rests on, and it is worth glancing at: the lines with the fewest listings are the ones to treat most loosely.

Why the total is arithmetic and not a measurement

The bottom row adds the columns. It is useful and it is not a measured quantity, for a reason worth being precise about: the sum of medians is not the median of sums. Nobody buys the median deck and the median trucks and the median wheels. Real buyers spend up on one thing and down on another, and the distribution of what people actually pay is wider than the middle column suggests and centred slightly differently.

So read the outer columns as the honest bracket. Shopping carefully across every line lands near US$268; buying the nicer option each time lands near US$554. That spread — a factor of 2.1 on the same list of parts — is the real answer to the question, and it is the part a single shop's “starter package” price cannot show you.

What we will not do is publish a cost of ownership per year. That needs to know how often each part wears out, and we measure prices, not durability. No telemetry, no warranty data, no survey. A yearly figure built from our prices and somebody's guesswork about wear rates would be the guesswork wearing our evidence as a costume.

The limits of each line

  • Departments are broad. “Wheels” holds park wheels and cruiser wheels; “bearings, tools and upkeep” holds a two-dollar tool and a premium bearing set. The quartiles are doing the work of telling you that.
  • Compatibility is not modelled. These are the prices of categories, never a quote for a setup that fits together.
  • Every listing counts once, regardless of what it sells. We cannot see sales, so a part nobody buys weighs as much as one every shop stocks.
  • US dollars only. Splitting six departments across eleven currencies would leave no line with a defensible sample, and we never convert.

Where the money actually goes

Reading the middle column as a share of the total is more useful than reading it as a list of prices, because it tells you which line is worth shopping hard.

No single line dominates, and that is the finding. A setup is not a deck with accessories — it is five or six comparable expenses, which is why the cheap-end and dear-end totals sit so far apart: the difference is not one big decision, it is the same modest decision made six times.

It also means the common advice to “spend on the deck” has a measurable cost. The deck is one line among several; doubling it moves the total by less than most people expect, and so does halving it. The lines that quietly add up are the ones nobody photographs — bearings, tools, grip, pads.

Anything that wears out has to be bought again, and the wear rate is the part we cannot see. What each replacement costs is on what parts cost.

Why can I not just add the medians myself?

You can, and that is the number at the bottom. But the sum of medians is not the median of sums: nobody buys the median of everything. Half of buyers will land above this figure and half below, and the quartile columns bracket that far better than the middle column does.

Does this include protective gear and shoes?

Yes, both are lines in the table. Leaving them out would understate what getting on a board costs, and they are among the larger lines.

Are these new prices?
