Why this table was wrong the first time we built it

It is worth saying, because it is the most common way a page like this goes silently bad. The first version searched product titles for “battery”, “wheels”, “belt” and so on inside the family the catalogue calls parts. It returned two wheels and one belt, and would have published medians on samples of two.

The reason is that e-skate parts are not filed under parts at all. They are filed by what they are — wheels, drive, transmission, brakes — and the query was looking in a drawer they were never in. The classification was right; the question was asked in the wrong language. Reading by family instead of by keyword turned three results into 2,060.

Nothing on this page is built by keyword search. Each row is a whole family of the catalogue, counted entire.

What owning one actually costs

Set against the price of a complete board, the useful comparison is not part-by-part but wear-item-by-wear-item. Wheels and belts are consumables: they go, they get replaced, and their median is the recurring cost of riding. Motors and drive components are failures rather than wear — rarer, and several times the price.

What we deliberately do not do is total these into an annual cost of ownership. That number would require knowing how often each part fails, and we measure prices, not reliability. We have no telemetry, no warranty data and no survey; a yearly figure built from our prices and somebody's guesswork about failure rates would be the guess wearing our evidence as a costume. The medians are here so a rider who knows his own wear rate can do that arithmetic himself, with real numbers.

The limits of this table

  • US dollars only. Splitting eight categories across eleven currencies would leave no category with a defensible sample, and we do not convert. This is the American market and says so.
  • A listing is not a part that fits your board. Compatibility is the whole difficulty of buying parts and we do not model it. Treat these as the price of a category, never as a quote.
  • Protective gear is in the table and is not a part. It sits here because it is what a rider buys alongside the machine, and leaving it out would understate what getting on the thing costs.
  • Prices come from the shops we read, not from manufacturers. Where only one shop carries a part, that is the only price there is — the same limitation as everywhere else on this site.

What the parts are worth against the machine

A part's price means little on its own; it means a great deal set against what the machine cost. The categories above run from a median of US$30 to US$104, and the median complete board on this site is a few hundred dollars more than the dearest single category. The arithmetic that follows is worth doing before buying rather than after.

Two patterns are visible in the table and neither is obvious from a shop page. First, the consumables cluster tightly — the categories a rider replaces on a schedule sit within a narrow band of each other, which means the recurring cost of riding is predictable and modest. Second, the failure categories have enormous upper quartiles: the difference between the median and the 75th percentile in the drive and motor categories is larger than the entire median of most other categories. A failure there is not a slightly worse month; it is a different order of expense.

That asymmetry is the practical reason to care about which brand you buy from, and it is one this site cannot settle for you. We know what a replacement costs. We do not know how often it is needed, and the page that claimed to would be guessing.
